TIN CAN PROMISES

We used to dance on Saturdays,
the DJ knew your name.
A night club draped in laser beams;
you moved like fire inside a flame.
Last call, and it’s time to leave,
love tastes like a song we know…
Echoes of the times we grieve
Mirror balls and white light snow.
Past tense, present afterglow,
the sky explodes in stars
Melts into the dawn
The stillness of the darkness
makes a pathway to the sun

Sleeping on my chest,
I touch your hair, the ceiling watches…
It’s morning in my memory,
love tastes like the new day falling.
Now the blue horizon fades
to shades of gray, to summer haze.
Hearts entwined (they beat as one)
A kiss to build a dream upon…
A song that poets sing,
a hand, a ring, a veil, a smile…
Some tears and candle lights,
White laced gown (perfect night)
Are lovers truly blind?
Upon our tongues, the ties that bind…
Our vows to what might be,
We see our friends all gathered round,
The priest says, “Kiss the bride.”
We hide behind a wall of sound,
Applause in waves of grace,
Cast your faith into the sea,
Belief does make it so, you see?
Escaping down the aisle, we’re free…
Dragging tin can promises,
married just, in God we trust.

Upon my knees, I asked you, “Please.”
Inside a garden scene, surreal,
The sky was blue, strung canvas clouds…
Shapeshifting like circus wheels,
Time implies what luck reveals.
Sexy conversations spin,
Upon a blanket, sipping sin.
You lifted up your tie-dyed dress,
Exposed your soul, and so confessed…
Cried my name as if a prayer,
We felt as if our love was blessed.
Yes, love tastes like your auburn hair
Falling in my face as rain.

Back then, you couldn’t get enough,
Moaning, making angels blush.
Creamy sunshine on our lips,
We thought no one would ever know
But secrets come to play, indeed,
Compromise the things we need.
But that’s another story…
Another stanza, day, or line.
Love tastes like another time…
The first time ever, was it then?
You came in waves of sweet delight,
Addicted to the where and when
The elegance of there and then,
A circumstance of chance.
Exchanging numbers with some words,
I phoned you three days later
Bad advice from foolish friends,
So strange the way we follow trends.
Like birds fly into mirrors,
Exchanging reasons for absurd
With words, we weave a nest,
A nswers for the test, we steal
And life we think we want,
Some notes to self, some cans and cant’s
These lines that hold us back,
Focusing on the loss and lack
While questions reign supreme,
Remembrance is a demon
Scratching at the walls of doubt,
Love tastes like a curse
Playing scenes out in reverse.

Our special day was draped in white
A blizzard backdrop movie scene,
Your Father sang “The Wedding Song.”
Exchanging vows to “Claire De Lune.”
Then, all too soon, we said, “I do.”
Love tastes like beginnings…
I said, “I’ll never cheat on you.”
You said as much, the same.
Yes, love tastes much like promises,
Caramel candy in a name.
Retrospect is sweet as kisses
nostalgia is illusion
Justifying, breeds confusion,
Words are tools we use.
We speak as we are spoken to
Known as we are known,
Upon my lips, your salty tears
Whispering, it’s me, not you,
The words fly far too easily
I’ve heard that song before,
A rhapsody of closing doors
People, we replace
The look of love still on your face…
Honey slipping through your fingers,
A threshold toward a bed of roses
Memory of a pain that lingers,
Love tastes like deception.

Whispers hold a wealth of tears,
Pockets for our darkest fears.
Again, time turns the page,
Finding we have built a cage
A page of covetous desires…
Notebooks for a funeral pyre,
Our friends now watch them burn.
Epitaphs of lessons learned,
Repeated for deaf ears
For love tastes like your salty tears,
Reasons we refuse to hear.
The days of wine and whiskey
And the dances we once shared.
Silence seething in a glass,
Toasting to our future’s past…
A song we used to sing,
The sparkle of a diamond ring,
You placed it in your purse,
The chorus now becomes the verse
You said he’s just a friend…
Beginnings blur to bitter ends,
Repeating history once again,
Things that made a happy home,
Heartbreak poems, you write alone,
Colliding worlds that we create ,
The taste of lust that fascinates…
I drew a line with silence,
And you crossed it with one word,
The last thing that I heard…
Was more of a shot between the eyes.
Love dissolves in blind degress
In promises we compromise
