ONE TOO MANY SKIES TO KISS

Amber haze, like wool,
is pulled to blind nostalgic eyes
We long for changing seasons,
markers for what’s come and gone
September bleeds October…
feeds November’s lust for white
As Autumn grieves the ghosts
of love’s demise on summer lawns

We met by chance persuasion;
more a blind date for the blind
Your photo slightly filtered;
classic tale of bait and switch
For cause begets effect,
illusion fools the clouded mind
Tripping over tongues we fell
into each other’s ditch

You read my palm, a sacred psalm,
unfolds with slippery words
Speaking of a time before…
the time of gods and men
Sipping Lilac wine, you said:
“My lifeline’s split in two”
Pathways we could not undo,
histories of where and when

We often find ourselves
when we confess our darkest sins
Clinging to intention,
much the same as sacred prayer
Attraction clouds perception
as a love affair begins
Displaying loss so beautifully
inside the fowler’s snare

And just like that we’re trapped,
never knowing how, or why
I lost myself inside her dreams;
she led my heart astray
With nothing more to say, we kissed,
and fell into the sky
A chill breeze snuffed the candle,
false redemption where we lay

With bones upon the hearth,
crackling memories churning fires
An extra blanket pulled against
her wicked disposition
Fallen, not quite finished,
I succumbed to her desires
Confessions on her lips as if
an act of sweet contrition

Yes…darkness makes you promises,
then breaks them with the dawn
Waking to her perfume; lines are blurred
from scent to taste
Listening to…
“A Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun”
It’s strange how music builds a cage;
states of mind we can’t erase

She left the same as trembling leaves;
her spell was long since cast
A pentagram with smiley face,
she signed her name in blood
A spider web was painted red,
a demon from your past
A poor excuse for fleeing
when good morning was enough

She wrote it wasn’t easy
to become a witch and such
DO WHAT THOU WILT DO,
death eventually must be paid
And love is merely lust
that’s masquerading in a touch
A momentary lapse of reason
when we’re getting laid

Now morning melts to afternoon
as twilight melts to mist
That time when dragons lose their sight,
and feel their way with fire
Becoming one with nature,
one too many skies to kiss
And altars built for poets
burning words they have acquired

We finally find redemption
once our losses have been cut
Filling in the missing time
we sacrificed in vain
The darkness that we clung to,
kills the light we live without
Searching for salvation,
feeding on the day’s remains
