SHADOWS AND LIES

Our shadows met in passing
While we talked beside the sun
They slipped into their darkness
As our voices became one

Then clouds arrived as harbingers
To mark the day with rain
As both our shadows disappeared
In plashets for our pain

We walked away in silence
As the day bled into night
Your history of distance
And my love affair with blight

For conversations surely kill
When words become as knives
Smothering each other’s will
With lives we sacrifice

And shadows cannot think or feel
On walls or city streets
Sewn into these mortal heels
Like sweat on satin sheets

Illusions born of lovers
Who were never meant to be
Hiding under covers
From our warped realities
