THE HITCHHIKER
Hitchhiking down the road
To his redemption
He was picked up by
The devil in disguise
Who looked just like
a portrait of his father
He hopped inside the car
to his demise
They talked about
the coming revelation
And all the fine details
of secret sins
How love and death
are relative to mischief
And poets writing on
the heads of pins
Of politics and angels
out to pasture
Of gaps between
the body and the soul
The distance from
existence back to nature
The dirt it takes to
fill a god-shaped hole
He listened to his father
feed him memories
Forgetting he was
going to be saved
Listening to a past
he was describing
How to dig the perfect
six-foot grave
And then it was revealed
that he’d been lied to
The choices that he made
were all in vain
For truth is twisted
by the lies we cling to
As guilt becomes
an omnipresent stain
Before he knew
The devil took a left turn
His new life slowly
drifting out of sight
He fell asleep
mid-sentence in the daylight
And woke up screaming
In the dark of night
