FOCUS

Yesterday, I focused on the promise of today
But that was sadly swallowed
by the fear of my tomorrow
A day always arriving
keeps me never in the present
A marker for my pain
and all the foolish paths I follow

They tell me I should make a list
To document my goals
To see the things that never were
As if they’re in my hands
But every list I make is filled
with lines of past mistakes
Filtering through an hourglass
Like tiny grains of sand

They tell me I should chase my dreams
Around Orion’s moon
To lasso all those shooting stars
To burn my words to ash
To capture all those devils
Whispering mischief in my ear
Ignoring stranger angels
Take some whiskey with my tears

But I can only see disaster
hovering down the road
An exit sign of grand design
With my name in green lights
WELCOME TO THE STATE OF PAIN
It’s time to say goodbye
We often lose our way
When chasing dreams
in lonely nights

But chasing dreams is easy
Lost in fractured expectations
We never see the moments
When focused on what’s missing
Exchanging precious words of love
For waves of accusations
Yet, I still taste your perfume
Crave your voice…
lips for kissing

They say that I should call you
Bite my tongue and make amends
Text you with an answer
No regrets when I hit send
But I cannot get past myself
My loss is my best friend
My truth is surely grounded
In how well I can pretend

Now, tomorrow is so far away
from yesterday’s we crave
The future swallows promises
The present tense (unkind)
Your words are paper roses
Placed upon a shallow grave
They haunt my recollections
Ghosts of lovers in my mind

You know, It’s easy to dissect a frog
To see them inside out
To spill their secrets in green blood
To kiss them squarely on the mouth
But fantasies are tasteless
Once the prince is left for dead
We see them as they used to be
So brilliant in our heads

Now, the promise of tomorrow
is illusion to be sure
When we focus on the milage,
not the distance
Memories screaming from the trunk
All the passengers are gone
Writing lines to justify
my vain existence
