Dusk is not a memory
just a shadow of the night
Twilight blurs like words to mute
the greens of summer lawns
Bleeding into evening,
blue-moon lovers mourn the light
Midnight howls in heaven’s bowels
while racing toward the dawn
Walking to the kitchen,
coffee feeds my sense of smell,
You’ve been awake for hours
(never heard you leave my side)
That line was more a harbinger,
in hindsight, hard to tell
We find the words in retrospect,
once love has surely died
Bagels nicely toasted as
you place them on a plate
Butter, jam, and cream cheese…
Something’s clearly on your mind
Sympathy with tea,
silence breeds your seething hate…
The life we often want
becomes the loss we leave behind
Repeating steps like Twister,
lose your footing, then you fall
Dancing in the dark
was just a fantasy at best
Some lyrics in a love song
that was scratched, as I recall…
We thought we won the world,
but sadly, settled for far less
And so you killed your darlings
Blocked the sun and changed your name
Cast aspersions on the moon
Trading fire for a flame
Now, the twilight blurs your words…
Mutes the grays of summer days,
And lights are ghosts you sip
inside a cup that holds your dreams
I ask you once again,
you bite your tongue, and walk away…
The truth, we skirt around
is sometimes never what it seems
Take, for instance, love,
in all its wonderment and glory
Attraction is deceptive,
expectations guide our hands
With Galaxies unfolding,
poems you slip inside the story
Castles of indifference,
friendships built on shifting sands
Now you say you’re leaving,
wish me well, but don’t unfollow
Believing what you’re told,
while drama sleeps in ivory towers
For righteous indignation
draws a line that’s hard to swallow…
Shallow graves for egos,
Epitaphs…wrought iron flowers
Cotton sheets for faces,
copper pennies for the eyes
Rigamarole to rigor mortis,
counting syllables like sheep
Placing friends in boxes,
based on nothing more than lies…
Dreaming of Medea,
Wide awake, yet fast asleep
