FROM THE SHADOWS

From the shadows of September
Whispers follow, call your name
Summer died; do you remember?
How you missed the April rains

Ghosts surrounding russet rustlings
Haunting sounds of days long past
Clinging to your favorite sufferings
Autumn leaves are bleeding fast

From the shadows, life is calling
Darkness stifles all you feel
No escape, they always follow
Sewn into your mortal heels

Falling steadfast toward October
Burning colors for the brain
Drawn to your dismissive umber
Leaves an omnipresent stain

Writing as the circles turning
Seasons cycle with the sun
Twisting demons of perspective
Unfulfilled, when I am done

Slicing through the darkest days
Praying for the will to change
It’s far too cold
It’s much too hot
I’m longing for the spring again

Never happy in the moment
Perfection is a question why
For August saw you call another
Something changed in mid-July

The feeling we’ve been here before
Auburn auguries unbound
Should have sensed the warning signs
Within your vacancy of sound

From the shadows, lovers whisper
Saying things behind a veil
Kissing in the Autumn moonlight
Careless, left a paper trail

Numbers scribbled on a matchbook
Postings of a mad affair
Perfume mixed with my suspicions
Watching as you walked on air

Seasons change to something new
A breath of air
A space in time
The state of grace, the bed we shared
In poetry, was so sublime

But that’s a moment lost to reason
Drifting hues will fool the eyes
Subtle changes missed in transit
Focused on December skies

Now the winter grabs your throat
Stealing breath with thoughts of when
It’s far too cold
It’s much too cold
I’m longing for the spring again

The seasons swirl like devils dance
Wreaking havoc on my pen
Solace in my happenstance
Dwelling between now and then

Walking through a frozen mindscape
Autumn leaves the way she came
Sucked of all her moist intentions
Screaming out another’s name

Crackling footsteps, I remember
Tonight in chains; this dark transition
From the shadows of September
Heartbreak, if you care to listen
