THE GROVE

No one knows the outcome at the start
Unless of course, you have the facts
To fill the gaps of what you lack
The wherewithal
The inclination
A hunch
A nudge
A push
A shove
A premonition
Ammunition
Bullet to the brain
But not so much a shot to kill
More a cut for blood to spill
(Red Pill) for a sheltered mind
He died so long before his time
Tangled in a web of rhymes
He spun with so much ease
Freezing in the summer
In a fur coat full of fleas

It’s true we often misconstrue
Our faith for what it’s not
Keeping records of offenses
Stabbing lovers in the heart
Praying in advance for chances
Whispers on the breeze
On our knees, when no one sees
We think our souls are saved
Ignoring truth we misbehave
While death is at the door
Smiling we invite him in
The dark things we adore
We’ve no idea what life is for
Racing toward an early grave
A modicum of mystery
Keeps you guessing all the way
Question marks to light your path
Secrets for your day of wrath
Or in this poem, it’s all on me
My twisted journey after all
This bloated boat you’re floating on
She used to be my friend
But words die quickly without breath
And so I now pretend

Her favorite color was chartreuse
Her dress so neatly pressed
Her words pristine (so crystalline)
With diamonds on her tongue
Cutting glass with sentences
Promises and false pretense
Making jokes at love’s expense
Apothecary, she was back then
Mixing mischief with her pen
Letting blood pour out like ink
Some turn of phrase to make you think
Some rhyme to steal your time
Always somewhere else to be
We know but still refuse to see
Amethystine nails across your skin
A photo for your phone
Moaning out your name
As if you were the only one
A quotient minus time (alone)
The sum of which is none

A slave to pain I was
Satisfaction (not enough)
Her lust for hurt she could not hide
Behind devouring eyes
Idiosyncratic (somewhat numb)
Automatic we succumb
She had a talent for dismay
A flare for fire on display
Burning in my bed
Corollas flame and so unfold
Quenched with her releasing
With sacred words, we lose our souls
Then compliment in kind
Some tits and ass and then (rewind)
While living in a dream
It seems the world I knew before
Was so much more sublime
When did time become a thing?
When I was young I had no cares
No spin the bottle
Truth or dare
Games were simpler, to be sure
The more you speak, it matters less
Than what is in your heart
I’m sure you can recall
Those summer days when life was sweet
Hanging on the rays of sun
Snow-white sand on shoreline streets
Building castles
Tilted fortresses
Stilted views sinking
How were you to know?
The lessons learned (now burned)
Ingrained, fantasies and lovely stains
On a blanket of muted colors
in a grove of discontent
