EVERYWHERE

The relentless drone of tires
on wet pavement outside my window
7:00 am Sunday morning (no sleep)
In a blind stupor with leftover remnants
of Saturday night’s bourbon
and misdirected anger
Pain shooting down a four-way street
in my head,
Here at the crossroads of
acceptance and denial
Pride or choked appologies
For now, I find no solace in this grey city
as cats cry
as babies whine
as tensions flare like so much fire

This is nowhere in particular
But yet again, it’s everywhere
Most definitely unspectacular
Sunday morning manic wisdom
Opening the door I step inside
My thoughts follow
Coffee bleeds into my cup,
dark with discontent
Black as my soul (it seems)
sleepily sitting in the diner
Waking compliance leaves nothing to chance
as I circle around my fears
Catching glimpses of truth
between sugar cubes and cream
Sirens and lies
forked tongues and kisses, twice split,
divided, confided, betrayed slyly
by a whisper

Yes, in screams, we hear nothing,
But whispers float on breath
like feathered promises
Or wishes dangling like ornaments
Desperate, we put faith in anything
Justify the meaningless
Hoping for the best
Futile imaginings of what’s best
But what’s best for you was not best for me
In the arms of another, I found thee
Now, words have little worth
like this tip on the table
I pay my bill and leave wondering
who are these people
on this Sunday morning street…

Are they like me?
Walking nowhere in particular
They seem to have purpose
Going somewhere (anywhere)
Blessed in clouded sun, glorious rain
Sacred misery
Wandering in perfect denial
Who’s to say for sure as I saunter past
places we once cherished
Your thoughts sewn to my heels
Shadows of you
Lost in whimsical conversations
Or crazy mad love in secret locations,
making plans based on sex
Dividing the world and, in the process,
creating a space in time (empty)
Except only memories,
as you are surely everywhere I look…
The city
The streets
The diner
The restaurants
The bars
The park
Our bed…
Everywhere
Everywhere
