LOST BEGINNINGS

Your quiver dance makes no sense
Steps fall on dark pixels
No one sees the beauty
In the frantic moves you made
A history you called your own
In ancient days, they danced the same
Blaming fire for fantasies
While warding off calamities
Conspiring with the gods of light
To curse the shadows of the night
It seemed to me you listened more…
I had something to say
To some degree, I took offense
Relinquishing my common sense
To strike the heels and bite the hands
Ignoring people, life’s demands
The seething of my anger
With the darkness, would I slay
But they repaid your vengeance
with the coming of the day
And so, we poured our souls
In wells of ink and shallow graves
And books of poems on parchment skins
Collecting sins for saving grace
With stripes of warpaint on the face
Pounding out the beat like hearts
That burn in sync with deft desires
Guilty for the dust we kicked
Boots we licked, and rust acquired
While elders of the village
Taking notes for you alone
For whom could ever understand
Those foolish rhymes to pass the time
Heartbreak turning on a dime
(He loves me now; she hates me then)
Scrawling wishes with my pens
This delicate embrace of death
Of darker shades of grey and blues
The consequence of what is true
Compared to what is not
Now you spend your lonely days
Painting hieroglyphs in caves…
Mysteries of what once was
And what will never be
Perhaps more candlelight would help
Maybe tears of rage and such
Emotions chase the artists’ muse
In circles around the sun
Until we are uncovered
Ghosts inside a human shell
Creating our own hell
With bones, we cling to like a toy
Trading joys for longing
Brings the painter to his knees
His color choices limited
By wants becoming needs
The candlelight is diming
As their eyes are dappled, black
Compensating structure
For the colors that they lack
Until the message fades
To some translucent shade of grey
Left with restless spirits
And the remnants of the day
Where tears cascade like candy rain
That tastes so bittersweet
It stings the eyes most viciously
And sanctifies defeat
Walking out into the night
The stars drown in the rain
The wind blows accusations
And the shadows know your name
You stand steadfast on solid ground
The cradle of your birth
Crying like the nightbirds sing
Oblivious to the pain they bring
Harmonious is just a word
No longer relevant to life
A missing piece of something
To contrast a world of strife
But you continue dancing
To the music in your mind
A song of lost beginnings
And an end you’ll never find
