Can I ask you a question?
It’s been heavy on my mind
Maybe it’s just me
Making more than what it seems
My dreams are much more vivid lately
The weight of words is murder
You’ve probably heard it all before
Before the fall
Before the call
Before the letter on the wall
“Goodbye, my love! I’ve had enough…”
But be that as it may
The things we say are chains, you see
And written words are just as bad
Markers for our history
Bloated bodies that we drag
What’s that you say?
The question? Okay, in just a bit…
I’m scattered; yes, I must confess
My words create a mindless mess
Like cars crash into drifts of dreams
It seems the lines of thought are blurred
In rows of consternation
Planting wishes in between
The seeds of our salvation
Sprouting nothing we can see
An answer should be known for sure
Before a question’s asked
You know me well enough to know
My “tells” do not so easily show
A poker face…a mask of sorts
A questioned answer, last resort
But that is neither here nor there
Games to play like truth or dare
You never cared at all before
Before the day was draped in gray
Before you cried
Before I lied
Before the lives, we tried to hide
Yes, please forgive my manic mind
I find it hard these days to think
On the brink or so to speak
My flesh is weak and nothing’s changed
The furniture’s just rearranged
But spotted memories still remain
Like that broken wine glass stain
You know the one, the one you threw
Once you knew the bond was broke
Thirteen years now, up in smoke
The scent still hangs inside the air
And do you care? Don’t answer that…
It’s not the question I want to ask
You know avoidance is my bane
A wall by any other name
A consequence when we decide
to justify what we ignore
Vanity of vanities
It’s all been said before
The weight of words is murder
A burden on our back….
What’s that? Oh yes, I’ll ask you now
It seems I got off track
