On mystic blue mornings,
we wake to a world full of wonder
But the sky’s an illusion
For we see with a head full of clouds
Foggy perceptions rule the day
And the sun becomes bothersome
A kaleidoscope dreamscape
With a music-box playlist
The melodies stutter
Like poetry from your mouth
Overpunctuated
Attracting lovers
In pink holographics
Glistening like prisms
Spraying pixels in multiples
Scattering reckless desires
On whitewashed pages
Of weathered wishes
Nourishing fantasies
Steeped in desperate invention
Carving out epitaphs
Into gray indifference
Hungry for moss and decay
You should know by now
That saying goodbye is much easier
Than saying I love you
But then again, love is an anomaly
Much like prayers for deliverance
Or Psalms for the dying
Sacred stories we tell ourselves
Like manicured graveyards
we stroll through
Planning in advance
Paying for burial plots
Pretty flowers, and
Obituaries for the living
Why do we sing to the moon
when we’re sure that the sun
is not listening?
Why walk while sleeping
Believing heartbreak is normal?
What is normal?
Normal is a slave to restless days
turning steadfast into nights,
and the dark is a blanket we cling to
And why do I dance with the dead
Busting out rhymes like last wills
Leaving a legacy of loss
Books of worthless stories
Ransacked with forked intuition
We often misplace our misgivings
With the best of intentions
But words create stumbling blocks
When carelessly thinking
Foolishly treading the pathways
of least resistance
Sadly, it’s true, that life without challenge
brings nothing but misery in waiting
When we first met, I spoke these words:
“Darkness becomes you.”
But that was a long time ago
And nothing has changed
I see those feathered red quills
that you forever fall upon
Swords of mayhem
Your blood spills once again
A stain upon your wall
Writing with shadows
That never shed light on true feelings
Aspects of indecision
Monikers for misery
Misnomers for casual lovers…
By any other names
You alone know who they are
The ones who deliberately
forget to remember
